From Darkness into LighT

Directed by guest conductor Nicholas Mulroy

Saturday 25 November 2023
Holy Trinity Church, Bradford on Avon

It is surely better to light a candle than to curse the darkness, and that is—appropriately—the theme of our Advent concert. At a dark time of year when we all seek comfort and hope our music looks forward to Christmas; we will sing of the physical, spiritual and symbolic signs of hope.

The centrepiece of our offering is the charming trio of little carols by Herbert Howells, Here is the Little Door, Sing lullaby and A Spotless Rose. Interwoven with those are some contemporary pieces by Roderick Williams, Kerensa Briggs and Ben Ponniah. Then there’s the lovely image of Jesus Christ as an apple tree composed by Elizabeth Poston and John Tavener’s interpretation of Christ as a lamb. Warlock, Victoria, Gesualdo, Jean Mouton and Praetorius complete a varied programme in the peaceful and cosy ambience of Holy Trinity, Bradford-on-Avon.

We are very fortunate to be conducted for this concert by Nicholas Mulroy. One of the most sought after tenors of his generation, he has sung Bach’s Evangelist for several of the eminent conductors of our time. He is also Associate Director of the Dunedin Consort, one of the world’s leading Baroque ensembles.

Do join us for an uplifting evening.
